Determinants of Demand for Wine - Price sensitivity and perceived quality in a monopoly setting
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to characterise the demand for wine. In contrast to the majority of current research efforts this paper treats wine as a heterogeneous good with a range of inherent characteristics. Each wine included in the study is described by twelve variables including, among others, price, quality, sensory attributes and country of origin. Using unique data that cover 90 percent of all wines sold in Sweden we conclude that consumers do recognise quality in wine, that price elasticity is non-constant and decreases with price and that consumers lay great emphasis on the country of origin of the wine. Deregulating network industries: dealing with price-quality tradeoffs
This paper examines the effects of introducing competition into monopolized network industries on prices and infrastructure quality. Analyzing a model with reduced-form demand, we first show that deregulating an integrated monopoly cannot simultaneously decrease the retail price and increase infrastructure quality. Second, we derive conditions under which reducing both retail price and infrastr...
متن کاملThe Determinants of the Quantity-quality Balance in Monopoly
This paper describes how a monopolist manipulates the balance of quantity and quality in order to increase revenue when its customers treat quantity and quality as substitutes. This ‘skewing’ of quality depends on the characteristics of customer’s demand for quality. Customers differ in demand for quality, because they differ in either (i) their preferences and/or (ii) their time cost per unit....
متن کاملStrategic pricing with reference effects in a competitive supply chain
The reference-price effect refers to the demand deviation caused by consumers’ perceived losses or gains when the current market price of a product differs from a cognitive benchmark (known as a reference price) formed by the customers based on past prices. The impact of such a reference effect on the dynamic pricing policy of a monopolist has been widely studied in the literature. However, des...
متن کاملTwo-echelon Supply Chain Considering Multiple Retailers with Price and Promotional Effort Sensitive Non-linear Demand
This study deals with the effects of a supply chain (SC) with single product, multiple retailers and a manufacturer, where the manufacturer(he) produces lotsize of the product that contains a random portion of imperfect quality item. The imperfect quality products are sold in a secondary shop. The new contribution of this paper is a new non-linear demand function. Demand of the end customers va...
متن کاملProcess RDin Monopoly under Demand Uncertainty
I investigate RDefforts for process innovation in a monopoly with uncertain demand. Two different models are proposed, where either (i) the reservation price is affected by an additive shock and the marginal production cost is increasing, or (ii) a multiplicative shock on the slope of demand combines with a flat marginal production cost. In either case, price-setting behaviour generates a large...
